Essentially, we tend to assume that people who are physically attractive are also friendly, intelligent, pleasant, and likable. Think about h ow this might affect a variety of social situations, including how employees are selected or how jurors in a criminal case might respond. Consult Your Instructor Before you decide to tackle a project for your social psychology class, you should always clear your idea with your instructor. This initial step can save you a lot of time and hassle later on. Your instructor can offer clear feedback on things you should and should not do while conducting your research  and might be able to offer some helpful tips. Also, your school might require you to present and gain permission from an institutional review board. Understand the Research Process Even if you are really excited to dive right in and start working on your project, there are some important preliminary steps you need to take. First, you need to spend a little time investigating your topic. If you are going to be writing a paper or creating a presentation, you are going to need this background information. Plus, its an excellent way to gain further insight into your topic and maybe pick up a few more ideas for your own research. A Word From Verywell Social psychology topics can provide a great deal of inspiration for further research, whether you are writing a psychology paper or conducting your own psychology experiment. In addition to some of the social psychology topics above, you can also draw inspiration by considering your own questions about social behavior or even looking at social issues that you see taking place in the world around you.

Environmental Effects on Athletes Free Essays

Environmental Effects on Athletes Another way to explore how athletes are affected by different factors preventing or causing them to perform at their highest level is through their environment. Coaches, parents, peers, childhood, and even the media can manipulate athletes. A coach can get you out of your game by giving too much feedback or not any at all. We will write a custom essay sample on Environmental Effects on Athletes or any similar topic only for you Order Now Parents often put too much pressure on their child, making them either excel or, for others, burnout. Starting sports at a young age can also have it benefits, like teaching healthy competition and life lessons. On the other hand, it can lead to more injuries in the long run or teach them unhealthy sportsmanship. For older athletes, it’s the peers and media that can have a strong effect. Bad influences in the media and criticism from reporters can take over or overwhelm athletes and cause them not to reach their full potential. Athletes need a certain environment to perform to their optimum ability, through their childhood and even as they grow older. The childhood of an athlete is the most important time to build the characteristics of a champion. Certain factors in an athlete’s childhood can strongly determine not only if they are successful in sports, but also in life. A healthy environment can help children in their sports to â€Å"increase physical and mental health, learn healthy competition among peers and the sense of belonging gained by being part of a team† as Lucie Westminister, a psychology researcher and writer, says (Westminister 1). Coaches and parents are key factors in creating this healthy environment. Giving kids praise for their performance can bring out desirable changes in behavior and promote responsibility. Anything as simple from a pat on the back, to a nod, can affect a growing athlete. According to research found by Westminister â€Å"coaches who give positive reinforcement, provide effective feedback, and foster a caring climate provide the best developmental outcomes for children† (Westminister 2). By providing a favorable outlook and always caring it is easier for children to grow up to excel and want to push themselves. Too much pressure or too little can cause children to grow up thinking sports don’t matter or not want to push themselves to be champions. Coaches may just be thinking about winning but the characters in children’s lives that nurture positive youth development will end up with children who succeed. If coaches and parents are supportive and connected in the right way they can create a champion. On the other hand, there are many risks by introducing sports at a young age. The highly competitive and ‘win at all costs’ attitude at colleges and seen by professional athletes are starting to affect children too. Pushing kids too hard while they are young can lead to a greater risk of injury, unsportsmanlike behavior, or even cause them to burn out. According to Lucie Westminister â€Å"Injuries such as tears of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) occur more and more in young athletes due to the rigors of practice and competitions†(Westminister). By starting younger, kids wear out their ligaments and joints faster making them more susceptible to injury. Children can also learn unsportsmanlike behavior by witnessing other players, parents, and even coaches. If kids aren’t subjected to the right atmosphere, they will learn bad behavior, just like how Westminister explains â€Å"Children learn behaviors by seeing another person complete the same activity, and therefore witnessing these behaviors may lead the child to mimic these in similar situations† (Westminister). Another negative effect of starting young is a child’s outlook of undue pressure. This negative and high-pressure world we now live in is causing more and more athletes to burn out. If the athlete feels too much pressure or that he or she is not receiving the right feedback it can cause him or her to stress out and no matter how successful, hate the sport they’re in. Family and coaches can prevent a champion from being made through undue pressure. The environment around a child in sports can be a negative impact on there life, unless the right steps are made. As kids grow older media and peers play a more influential role on determining if they will be a champion or not. Television, movies, magazines, video games, the Internet, all have effects on athletes just like how Wayne Wilson found â€Å"94% of U. S. children ages 8 to 17 watch, read about, or listen to sports using one form of media†(Wilson 6). Athletic performance is strongly reduced by distractions, which can arise from peers, unexpected high performance, media, criticism and plenty more. Newspapers, paparazzi, reporters, and even fans can all alter the performance of an athlete through public forums in the media. Many athletes are the targets of the media, always being critiqued and dissected, like Miki Ando. The constant and negative publicity of her figure skating performances caused Ando to struggled in 2005 and 2006, almost missing her opportunity in the 2006 Olympics. The only way to stay out of the media is to do nothing just as Wilson states â€Å"Mediocre people play it safe and avoid criticism at all costs. Champions risk criticism every time they perform†(Wilson 15). Professional athletes are always facing criticism, but with the right mentality, champions can be made. From childhood to adulthood athletes are always facing obstacles in the way of their dreams. Children must face the pressure from their parents, coaches, or any influential adults around them. In order for kids to gain the mentality of a champion and learn life-long lessons, they must engage in the right environment. Throughout high school and college, athletes deal with the media attacking or praising them, along with parents and coaches. Friends and video games also come as a distraction, either giving them the wrong ideas or leading them down the wrong path. Distractions are everywhere preventing athletes from achieving their dreams, but in the right environment, they can become a champion. What factors affect heat loss Essay Example

What factors affect heat loss? Paper I have been asked to investigate the link between colour and heat loss. Does the silver or the black cup lose its heat faster? HYPOTHESIS I think that the silver cup will retain the heat for a longer period of time than the black cup, I think this because the black cup will absorb the heat, where as the silver cup will reflect the heat back into the cup causing the black cup to cool down faster than the silver cup. BACKGROUND INFORMATION CONVECTION the hot water in both cups will have convection current in them. The hot water will rise and sink as the water begins to cool. This means the heat energy is being passed on to the metal cup over most of its inner surface. CONDUCTION the metal cups will get hotter as a result of the heat energy inside the cup. The water will pass on this heat energy due to the fact that metal is a good conductor of heat. The heat energy will be conducted throughout the metal cup to the outer surface where it will be transferred to the air around the cup as radiation. RADIATION hot objects (i. e. the metal cup) emit mainly INFRARED radiation, and the hotter the object the more radiation it will emit. We will write a custom essay sample on What factors affect heat loss? specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on What factors affect heat loss? specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on What factors affect heat loss? specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer How much radiation the object emits will depend on the surface. The black cup had a dark matt surface and therefore will emit more radiation. This will mean that the black cup will lose more infrared radiation than the silver cup (which is a poor emitter of infra-red radiation) and as a result it will lose its heat quicker than the silver cup over the same amount of time. EQUIPMENT * Thermometer   Metal cups (silver and black) Timer METHOD We started of with two cups one black and the other silver. Then we set up the apertures like the diagram above. We then got boiling water and poured it equally into each cup, then returned the lid. After the lid was replaced we recorded the temperature every 5 minutes. SAFETY To ensure ultimate safety during this test I have to take a few safety factors into account. The main thing that I have to take into consideration is the fact that I have to use boiling water to o this experiment, this is very dangerous if misused as it can seriously burn and scar for life. The other safety feature also includes the boiling water but for a different reason. As we are using the water near to a computer we have to be careful not to allow the water to come in contact with it, because if it does it could break the computer or worst still it could spark and harm one of us. FAIR TEST I could make sure that the same volume of water was poured into each cup also make sure that the water poured into the cups at the same time was also at the same temperature RESULTS Time (Minutes) Temperature (oc) silver cup Temperature (oc) black cup. End of lesson Total drop in temp25 33 My results show me that the black cup lost the heat faster than the silver cup did Experiment number 2 I have decided to repeat my experiment using a computer. This will make it more accurate because with the use of the computer it is 99. 9% accurate and the is no gap for human error. Results 2 Elapsed Time Temperature Temperature 7 ANALYSING As time increased the temperature decreased, the black cup decreased / lost heat faster than the silver cup. As time went on the black cup was consistently absorbing heat from the hot water inside the black cup, where as the silver cup consistently reflected the heat back into the cup. This is because the black cup loses heat quicker than the silver because lighter surface do not conduct heat as well as darker surfaces. EVALUATING My original hypothesis was correct- I think that the silver cup will retain the heat for a longer period of time than the black cup, I think this because the black cup will absorb the heat, where as the silver cup will reflect the heat back into the cup causing the black cup to cool down faster than the silver cup.

Habits and Traits of Jumping Spiders

Habits and Traits of Jumping Spiders When you look at a jumping spider, it will look right back at you with large, forward-facing eyes. They can be found throughout the world in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. Salticidae is the largest family of spiders, with over 5,000 species described worldwide. While more prevalent in the tropics, jumping spiders are abundant nearly everywhere in their range. Jumping Spider Traits Jumping spiders are small and scrappy carnivores. They are often fuzzy and measure less than a half inch in body length. Salticids can run, climb, and (as the common name suggests) jump. Prior to jumping, the spider attaches a silk thread to the surface beneath it, so it can climb quickly back to its perch if needed. Salticids, like most other spiders, have eight eyes. Their unique eye arrangement makes it easy to differentiate jumping spiders from other species. A jumping spider has four eyes on its face, with an enormous pair in the center, giving it an almost alien appearance. The remaining, smaller eyes are located on the dorsal surface of the cephalothorax (a structure combining the fused head and thorax). The Himalayan jumping spider (Euophrys omnisuperstes) lives at high elevations in the Himalayan mountains. They feed on insects that are  carried up the  mountain on the wind from lower elevations. The species name, omnisuperstes, means highest of all, so its not that surprising that specimens of this remarkable species have been found on Mount Everest at elevations of 22,000 feet. Fast facts: Jumping Spider Classification Kingdom: AnimaliaPhylum: ArthropodaClass: ArachnidaOrder: AraneaeFamily: Salticidae Diet and Life Cycle Jumping spiders hunt and feed on small insects. All are carnivorous, but a few species also eat pollen and nectar. Female jumping spiders build a silk case around their eggs and often stand guard over them until they hatch. (Youve probably seen these spiders with their eggs in corners of exterior windows or door frames.) Young jumping spiders emerge from the egg sac looking like miniature versions of their parents. They molt and grow into adulthood. Special Behaviors and Defenses As the common name suggests, a jumping spider can jump quite far, achieving distances more than 50 times its body length. If you examine their legs, however, youll notice that they are not strong or muscular in appearance. Rather than relying on muscle strength to leap, salticids are able to quickly increase the blood pressure in their legs, which causes the legs to extend and propel their bodies through the air. The size and shape of jumping spiders eyes give afford them excellent vision. Salticids use their enhanced sight to their advantage as hunters, employing their high-resolution vision to locate potential prey. Some jumping spiders mimic other insects such as ants. Others are able to camouflage themselves to blend into their surroundings, helping them sneak up on prey. Insects and spiders with heightened visual acuity often engage in elaborate courtship dances to attract mates, and jumping spiders are no exception to this rule.
